Loving yourself has never been more en vogue. Or maybe it has and I was never informed. I’m super stoked it’s happening now because I’m finally at a place where I can hear it and try to live it. My struggle with my body and myself started long ago in a land called Camelot and it devolved and twisted even farther over the years. My weight has gone up and down more times than a stripper on the pole and I have always been either on some sort of restrictive diet or off it with a rebellious vengeance.
I found Weight Watchers in 2002 and that really worked for me. Until it didn’t. I have this switch that flips willy nilly and I still haven’t figured out how to control it. Whenever I follow the Weight Watcher plan, I succeed. Along the way it became a lifestyle. I loathe the name because it puts more focus on my actual weight than I care about at this point in my life. But I love the plan because no food is bad or forbidden. You can have anything you want, you just have to work it into your weekly plan. if you have less processed food, you’ll have more points left over for Cadbury mini eggs or french fries or half a pizza. If you move your body more, you can stuff more in your mouth hole. It all really comes down to balance. As most things do.
Somehow I happily happened upon HNS’ Instagram and loved founder Katie’s loving life like it’s her job, carefree attitude and her inspirational, all-inclusive nature. I love that she celebrates women, no matter their size or shape and that she is empowering women to celebrate themselves. I also love that she geeks out with strangers on the internet over weirdo tendencies like believing in aliens. We’ve all got something that connects us to each other. Remember that the next time some jerkstick cuts you off in traffic.
The love yourself, love your body message that Katie and her husband Bradford are laying down fits perfectly with the mindset I’ve finally reached in my body-image journey. Mostly healthy stuff goes in, move your body on the regular and love what you’ve got. Hallelujah and amen, soul sister.
There is an HNS shop, which sells cute clothes including some super dope Healthy is the New Skinny tanks. You should buy one. For me. My birthday is in November so you’d better get right on top of that, Rose.
I picked up this smoking hot super diva from her Instagram as well. She is a self love advocate and another body-image inspiration. She also has an Instashop where you can buy the outfits she wears. She does all the style work, you bring the confidence to rock the looks. Tag me on any Insta pics of her clothes that you wear. I want to revel in the glory that is you.
IATG is a book, a website, a movement. They also have an Instagram because obvi. The message is about loving yourself, warts and all and working together with other girls to create a supportive community. This is such an important mission to instill in girls(in everyone, really) from an early age so maybe the next gens can skip the women-hating stage and move right into honoring and enjoying relationships with their gfs without the baggage.
This is their vision statement:
A girl’s physical, emotional and mental well-being is rooted in her self-worth. And we are living in an epidemic of self-doubt. I AM THAT GIRL is helping girls to transform self-doubt in to self-love by providing a safe space to be lifted up and have honest conversations about things that matter. Every day, girls are bombarded with messages that attack what she is NOT and we work every day to help her love who SHE IS; to see that in herself and inspire that in others.
This girl is a new-ageish hippie after my own heart. She’s taken all of the good stuff I grew up with in the commune and tossed the rest. She preaches self-love, kindness, acceptance and striving towards finding your purpose. Hers is the kind of individualized, do what works for you, but do it with love kind of spirituality that I can get behind. Her Instafeed is a nice daily dose of inspiration and motivation. She also waxes deep thought-y on her YouTube channel, The Daily Dose. You can’t really go wrong with a dose of what she’s dishing out.
Meet the Kind Girls, the you CAN sit with us crew. Kind Campaign is the response two forward-thinking girls had to counteract the pervasive Mean Girl mentality that young women often succumb to. How amazing to be able to identify the problem at such a young age and then to go out and do something to change it. I am inspired by these women every day on their Instagram.
They made a documentary about the realities, thoughts and feelings behind the Mean Girl issue. They travel around the country speaking to girls about the fundamental importance of being kind to one another. They will help you create your own Kind Club or find one to join. They even have a page on their website where you can share your truth, make an apology and take the Kind Girl pledge. How can you not love these women and want to wrap them up in a big, snuggly pink angora sisterhood hug?
This was the pledge I made on their website : I pledge to use my words to lift, encourage and support other women and girls. I pledge to call someone on unkindness if I see it. I pledge to always look for the awesome in every female I encounter.
Who will be the next to take the pledge?
I want to thank and celebrate all these women and men that are working to spread the positive self-love movement. THANK YOU. For reals. It’s a big freaking deal and it deserves mucho respek, big ups and hella love. I want to spread this self-love virus across all the lands. This kindness virus.
There is something of value in everyone. Even that guy I think is a total tool. Even that girl that sits by herself during lunch on the quad. Even that jerkstick that cut you off in traffic. Even you.
I don’t there is a greater gift than getting to see yourself from another’s perspective. Remember this Dove commercial? You are more beautiful than you know. Deal with it.
