Geek{ish} – Game of Thrones

So, I’m a geek.  Duh cubed divided by Pi.

Ok, so I’m I’m not a MATH geek.  But I am a geek.  The sort that loves shows like Game of Thrones.  So I love Game of Thrones obvs.  But do I really?

Out of the 40 major characters listed on the GoT wiki I only like half, four for which that affection is questionable, 8 of which are dead.  Nine characters that I love and are still alive.  Nine characters suffering the indignities, the horrors, the grievous harm and misdeeds of this miserable world they inhabit.

Is everything really always so grim?  Do they never have a party that doesn’t involve a bloodbath or an orgy?  Can they not just play shuffleboard and have a few beers?  Is there any relationship that doesn’t end with heads on spikes, throat arrows, or the love of your life fucking your dad?  I’d kill for an amicable divorce or a widow who lost her dude from old age.

I get it, sex and death sell.  But isn’t anyone else kind of full up on the bloodlust?  I feel unshockable at this point and exhausted by any attempts by others to do so.  I want to see something less gritty, less real.  Something fanciful, effervescent, something NEW.  Human misery seems to be easy to portray, the options are truly endless.  You want to show some true creativity up in this bitch?  Write some joy and make it interesting and relevant and without schmaltz.

Game of Thrones is a giant bummer.  And the dragon sightings are too rare.

Also, fucking Ramsey and Theon make me want to puke in my mouth and die until I’m dead or at least kill them until they are.  And now this tiny motherfucker is rape-deflowering Sansa, aka Lady Misery, while we’re forced to watch THEON suffer.  Really?  I think we’ve seen enough of Theon’s suffering.  And I’m pretty sure the person who is actually suffering from this excruciatingly violent, humiliating rape is the WOMEN BEING RAPED.  Can I get a hallefreakinglujah? Comeuppance best be forth and with.

And while we’re at it, George R to the R, can you dial it back a tinch on all the horrendous sexual violence against women?  We get it, it’s hard out there for a chick.  But modern day chicks are geeks too and we want to enjoy your shit without feeling violated by proxy.  K thx byee!

95% of the reason I’m still in this gloriously made, phenomenally written, brilliantly portrayed gloomfest is this individual.  Gentleman, scholar, warrior, baller.  I’ll see him to his end, whether it be on a spike or on the Iron Throne.  One imp to rule them all.

I’m a 44 something Scorpio who does not at all enjoy getting caught in the rain. I’m a mom to one whirling dervish, a former child and family therapist and reformed social worker. I have fought the monsters called Depression and Addiction for a lifetime. I want to be a part of the kindness movement. I want to be honest and real, sharing my struggles and successes on my path with others navigating their own. I want to lift up other women and be uplifted by them. I want to honor the bits between right and wrong, black and white – the grays, the ish. The place where life is actually lived.

I love Game of Thrones! I love Tyrion the most! But I’m with you. My favourite parts of the show is the connections that happen between people, often unlikely people. And I was left cold this week after seeing what happened with Sansa. Can the girl get a win every now and then? Geeez
